An interesting study on the results of blood transfusion at the prehospital stage in victims with penetrating wounds
A total of 143 victims were analyzed (prehospital blood transfusion = 61, control = 82). The average age of the victims was 34 years with no demographic differences. Mean transport and on-site time was longer in the WPC group, with a 5-minute increase in total time to hospitalization. Time to first unit of blood was significantly lower in the WPC group compared to the control group (8 minutes vs. 27 minutes; p<0.01). In-hospital mortality was lower in the WPC group compared to the control group (7% vs. 29%; p<0.01).

When controlling for victim age, NISS, tachycardia performed by emergency medical services, and total prehospital time, multivariable regression revealed an independent 11% increase in mortality with each minute of delay in blood administration after trauma (OR 1.11, 95% CI 1.04-1.19).
